Some of the most important things to consider when selecting makeup for Halloween, special effects and cosplay is its color payoff, smudge factor, and durability.

Selecting makeup that has enough color pigments to stand out against the skin will save you time and look better by having good color intensity. Buying face makeup from hobby stores may be a great alternative for children’s makeup or a less important event but you’ll  want to go for high quality if you are attending a themed event or having photos taken, otherwise it will appear streaky and fade quickly.

Smudging with Halloween makeup looks can become a nightmare, no pun intended!

Selecting makeup that can dry down to a fixed finish is the way to go for large body coverages or looks that extend beyond the face onto the neck and chest. Having makeup transfer on your guests when you greet them or your costume can be a party foul.

Lastly, durability should be considered. Include primer, makeup setting powder and spray that keeps it in place for an extended time.

Cream based makeup should be heavily set and the finished result should be fixed with a waterproof setting spray.

Unless sweat steaks and dripping makeup are apart of the look, you’ll need to lock it down for the best results.

Favorite Halloween Makeup Recommendations:

  • Mehron Paradise Makeup AQ paints are excellent for high fashion, vibrant colors. The formula is mixed with water to activate and applied with brushes and sponges to create the desired look. It is very easy to blend and features some off the trendiest finishes such as a neon uv glow, metallic and glitter

  • Mac Pro Palette paintstick is excellent for high color pay-off and ease of use. It comes in a palette or can be purchased individually in a stick by color. They are non-oily but need to be set. You can use fingers, sponges or brushes to apply.

  • ProAiir Airbrush Paint is one of the most quality products due to its water repellent ingredients and comes in either kits or individually for selecting the perfect shade. It can be painted on by a brush or if you are an experienced artist, it is used with an airbrush machine to cover large areas quickly and create smooth, high color finishes. It is perfect for anything you throw at it, whether it be water, sweat, rubbing and performance. It should be removed with oil as it is waterproof.

  • Ben Nye Cream Colors are excellent if you prefer a ready made product that doesn’t require mixing. These colors can be used to create detailed effects without the worry of dripping. It would be a suitable choice for a person with an unsteady hand and small area where more color control and shading  is needed. Since it cream it will need to be set adequately with powder.

  • My go to setting powders for cream products are RCMA No-Color powder, and for small areas, use eyeshadow  in the corresponding shade either to set or create gradient details within the design

  • Waterproof Setting spray includes Green Marble setting spray, On ‘Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray, and Huda Resting Boss Face
